A small magnet seems like an easy way to check a 304 stainless steel wood stove. Hold it against the metal: if it sticks, reject the stove; if it falls away, accept the claim. That shortcut is too simple. For a Hillrein Zhengtu buyer, magnetic attraction is an observation to describe, not a pass-or-fail certificate for the steel grade.
The useful question is more specific: what material is specified for the part you are checking, and what information supports that specification? Start with the Zhengtu inner chamber rather than treating every visible piece of hardware as one sample.
Why a 304 stainless steel wood stove may attract a magnet
304 belongs to the austenitic family of stainless steels. In its annealed condition it generally shows little attraction to a magnet. Cold working can change part of its internal structure and increase magnetic attraction. The Australian Stainless Steel Development Association explains this in its technical FAQ on magnetic effects.
That is a general materials explanation, not evidence that a particular Zhengtu part underwent a particular manufacturing process. It does explain why the simple rule that magnetic metal cannot be 304 is unreliable. Conversely, little or no attraction does not identify a sample as 304: magnetic response is not a chemical composition measurement.
First identify exactly what you touched
A stove is an assembly. The chamber wall, outer body, handle and fasteners occupy different places and do different jobs. A result at a screw head cannot establish the grade of the chamber wall. The feature image shows the chamber opening and surrounding fasteners; the photograph itself is not a material test.
Hillrein's Zhengtu product specification identifies 304 stainless steel and an inner chamber approximately 3 mm thick. For a technical question, name that component explicitly. Ask about the inner chamber's material and thickness rather than asking whether the whole stove is magnetic.
If you have already noticed attraction, record the location and share a clear photograph of the cold part with support. Do not describe a weak pull as proof of counterfeit material, or no pull as independent confirmation of the grade. This article does not report a magnetic test of the photographed stove.
Ask for material evidence, not a stronger magnet
- Confirm the component: ask whether the stated grade refers to the chamber, body or another part.
- Confirm the specification: request the written grade and nominal thickness for that component.
- Ask what supporting documentation is available: if a material report is supplied, check which component or production batch it actually covers.
- Keep uncertainty visible: a product statement and an independently verified material result are different kinds of evidence.
Do not assume a batch certificate is available simply because a product page specifies 304. If documentation is essential to your purchase, establish what can be supplied before ordering. There is no need to scratch, grind or chemically treat an assembled cooking stove to make a purchasing question clearer.
Grade, condition and service life are different questions
The chamber of a stainless steel gasifier stove repeatedly works at high cooking temperatures. Zhengtu's approximately 3 mm 304 inner chamber is intended for that sustained use. Repeated heating can discolor stainless steel; a color change alone is not the same as structural failure. Visible distortion or substantial surface deterioration deserves a separate condition assessment, whatever a magnet does.
Likewise, the practical estimate of about eight to ten years for the inner chamber under normal proper use is not a universal warranty or something a magnetic test can predict. Fuel quality, overheating abuse, cleaning and storage all affect service life. Keep the stated material, the present condition and the support terms separate when evaluating longevity.
Bring the decision back to real cooking
The Hillrein Zhengtu stove combines its chamber with fan-assisted oxygen and gasification combustion for practical outdoor meals. Use dry small wood around 10 cm, leave air space during startup, let the chamber warm and increase the fan gradually. Low visible smoke depends on a stable burn; startup and refueling can still create visible smoke.
For a buyer, the worthwhile check is a clear component specification backed by whatever relevant documentation is available. A magnet can prompt that conversation. It cannot finish it.
